Kizhi - the pearl of KareliaThe beauty of the Russian North, the pearl of Karelia - Kizhi - is one of the 1650 islands of Lake Onega glorified in ages by the masterpieces of Zaonezhye carpenters. UNESCO has declared the Kizhi Architectural Ensemble a World Heritage Site because its monuments constitute some of the finest examples of wooden architecture in the world. In 2014, the famous Transfiguration church in the museum and preserve "Kizi" will celebrate its 300th anniversary. By then the restoration of this church, on witch 334 million rubles were already spent, should be finished. In the network of preparation of anniversary celebration the building of new roads and hotels on the island has already begun. |
