In 2006 two large international actions directed on preservation of historical and cultural heritage of wooden architecture of the republic took place in the Republic of Karelia: the Congress of historical cities and regions of Russia and the Forgotten Heritage. Ways to Rescue Wooden Architecture Monuments of Russia conference. Within a few years the Ministry of Culture and Public Relations of the Republic of Karelia and institutions of culture of the republic together with the Finnish party have been implementing successfully the Vedlozerie. Kinerma and Development of Cultural, Ecological and Rural Tourism in Olonets Region projects. Italian and Finnish partners of projects Kinerma Friends Association (Finland), University of Oulu (Finland) and University of Florence (Italy) have shown great interest in development of cooperation for studying and preservation of wooden architecture of Karelia.

In the Summer of 2006 delegation of the University of Florence visited villages Bolshaya Selga of Olonets region and Kinerma of Pryazha region. Within this visit the Cooperation agreement in the field of culture and science between the Ministry of Culture and Public Relations of the Republic of Karelia, University of Florence and Petrozavodsk State University has been signed. In continuation of this work the University of Florence will organize the Wooden Architecture of Karelia. Joint Project of Italy, Finland, Russia, and Ukraine international seminar. Delegation from Karelia comprising members of Government of the Republic of Karelia, experts of institutions of culture and Petrozavodsk State University is also invited to participate in the seminar.

Within the scope of the visit Karelian delegation is planning to get acquainted with experience of Italian coleagues in preservation and use of historical and cultural heritage, sign a protocol of Cooperation agreement in the field of culture and science between the University of Florence, Petrozavodsk State University and the Ministry of Culture and Public Relations of the Republic of Karelia. Negotiations regarding opportunity of attracting foreign investments for restoration and preservation of wooden architecture monuments and historical villages of the republic, as well as on the subject of implementation of joint projects within the framework of programs of the European Union funds are scheduled.
