More than 400 showpieces from the fund of the museum of Stavropegic Holy-Transfiguration Valaam Monastery are presented at the exhibition opened in the capital of Karelia on February, 27.
As the Head of Karelia Sergey Katanandov has told at the exhibition opening, this great event in cultural life of the republic became possible thanks to radical changes which came over Valaam in recent years. According to the head of the northern republic, "it is symbolical that the Light of Valaam exhibition opened on the year of the 780 anniversary of the Christianization beginning in Karelia."
The exhibition discovers a small part of the richest spiritual and cultural heritage of Holy-Transfiguration Valaam Monastery. From 5 thousand pieces and documents stored in the monastery museum funds on the island of Valaam in Ladoga lake, the opened exhibition presents collections of icons, paintings, books, general-purpose articles, monastic canonicals, as well as photo- and videodocuments. There is also presented a rare icon of 1856 The Valaam monastery founders Saint Sergy and Saint German, the Inventory of library of the First class Holy-Transfiguration Valaam Monastery book published in 1864, inkstand made in monastic community in the XIXth century.
The monastic museum displays tell about Russian writers, artists and composers who had visited the island of Valaam at various times - Nikolay Leskov, Nikolay Roerich, Arhia Kuindgy, Ivan Shishkin and Peter Tchaikovsky.
