In Finland nearby 290 roofs of cult buildings have shingle roofing. Roofs in Finland were covered with shingles since the Middle Ages. Up to the end of the XIXth century parishioners made shingles for labour-rent, that allowed to cover plenty of roofs with shingles. Roofs were turpentined. In XX century sawn shingles gradually replaced turpentined hand-made shingles, wrought nails and berch substrates. Formerly belltower roofs were covered with very wide shingles. It also conditioned special value of belltower in Kesälahti. Pointed shingles created original pattern of its roof.
Kesälahti belltower was built in 1836. Shingle roofing of the top tier of belltower has been replaced in 1994, roof of the bottom tier of belltower remained in its original shape and demanded restoration. Restoration works were financed within the scope of the following projects: Shingle Roofing, preliminary works and the project of restoration, Kesälahti Belltower Restauration and Masters of Shingle Making.
