On June, 15th in Bruxelles (Belgium) within the scope of the seminar, devoted to consideration of opportunities of launching a new project in the field of transport within the framework of the Northern Dimension program, Minister of Economic Development of the Republic of Karelia Mikhail Yurinov presented the Barents Link project of railway transport corridor.
Purpose of the Barents Link project is development of railway communication on the route Narvik (Norway) - Haaparanda (Sweden) - Tornio - Oulu - Vartius (Finland) - Kostomuksha (Karelia) - Archangelsk - Syktyvkar - Perm. This project is called to unite the Transsiberian railway and Norwegian port of Narvik that will provide outlet to the overseas traffic with North America (The Northern East-West freight corridor (N.E.W).
Barents Link project has been included by the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin in the list of priority projects for implementation within the scope of the Northern Dimension policy.
Considering the greater role of the Republic of Karelia in promotion of the project, as well as the fact that since November, 2005 Karelia is presiding in the Regional Council and Committee of the Barents Euro-Arctic Region, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia has suggested our republic to organize presentation of the project.
More than 30 people participated in the seminar: representatives of the state bodies of 10 countries participating in the Northern Dimension, European commission, international financial organizations, including the North Investment Bank, the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development, the World bank, etc.
