Government of Karelia and heads of the Finnish commune of Parikkala intend to raise the status of Syvдoro-Parikkala simplified check point at the Russian-Finnish border in territory of Karelia to the standard if international automobile check point. This agreement was achieved at the negotiation with the commune of Parikkala delegation (Finland) at the Ministry of Economic Development of Karelia.

As the SPB-TASS correspondent was informed at the press-service of the Ministry of Economic Development of Karelia, representatives of the Finnish party have informed on launching the project on check point development within the scope of Neighbourhood Southeast Finland - Russia program. Partners from Finland are Parikkala, Savonlinna and Lappeenranta, and Lahdenpohja region, as well as the town of Svetogorsk and Priozersky area of Leningrad region from Russia.

The Finnish party stated interest in development of tourism and various kinds of frontier cooperation through this check point. From 2002 to 2006 freight flow through Syvдoro check point has grown 1.7 times and has achieved 244 thousand tons, that has made 36% of general freight traffic through 7 operating simplified check points of Karelian length of border upon Finland. In 2006 implementation of 125 foreign trade contracts of 44 Karelian participants of foreign trade activities was accomplished through Syvдoro. In 2006 Syvдoro development project was included in the list of Russian priorities within the scope of the Northern Dimension international program.

Construction of the new Syvдoro-Parikkala international automobile check point is to be sealed at the interstate basis between Russia and Finland.
