New factories in Ladoga lakeside of Karelia will appear only upon approval of local residents; obligatory condition for new enterprises is using modern environmentally appropriate technologies. Head of Karelia Sergey Katanandov declared it on results of exit session of Government of the republic in the city of Sortavala, where prospects of social and economic development of Lahdenpohja, Pitkäranta and Sortavala regions were discussed. «We have come here not to excoriate, but to collect opinions of people,» - Head of Karelia emphasized.
As Sergey Katanandov has noted, «Ladoga lakeside is a very perspective territory, popular both among citizens of Karelia, and guests of the republic.» On the official data, incomes of local residents exceed average rates on Karelia, and level of registered unemployment is one of the lowest in the region, although when it comes to fiscal capacity of local budgets from own incomes, regions lag behind. Thereupon, Government of Karelia has made a decision to concentrate work on development of tourism, wood-working, farming, small business, extraction of road metal and building stone in these regions. As Head of the republic emphasized, within several weeks final decision will be made on the number of ballast and granite quarries to be create in the regions of Ladoga lakeside without causing harm to the environment and tourist potential of the territory. Public hearings will be held in nearby settlements regarding each of planned quarries.
Also, by the end of September in Ladoga lakeside settlements there will pass public hearings concerning creation of Ladoga Skeres natural park. Opinion of local residents is especially important, as they will face rigid restriction on using gifts of nature in the event of founding the park.
Besides, Head of the republic has charged the Ministry of Economic Development of Karelia to develop and implement measures to increase investments into economy of Ladoga lakeside. Monitoring over activity of wood tenants will enhance simultaneously, and local administrations will receive assistance in economic planning and organization of social work; housing construction will proceed in regions due to the budget of the republic.
Institutions of local government are recommended to speed up attraction of incomes in the budget, generate lists of free industrial sites, eliminate infringements of federal legislation at land management, complete development of schemes territorial planning of regions, etc.
«All our decisions on Ladoga lakeside development will be based on common sense and opinion of local residents, however, we can increase living standard only in cooperation with institutions of local government and people who elect them,» - thus Head of Karelia Sergey Katanandov summed up session of Government of the republic.
