Cooperation between Italy and Karelia

On August 7, Ministry of Culture and Public Relations of Karelia held a press conference devoted to results of official visit of the delegation of experts and representatives of Massa Martana and Montepulciano municipalities, Italy, to Karelia.

As the First Deputy Minister of Culture and Public Relations of the republic Antonina Kamirova has told, the Ministry develops a joint program on possible cooperation between Karelia and two municipalities of Italy in the sphere of preservation of wooden architecture monuments, revival of historical villages of South Karelia and development of cultural tourism.

During the visit experts from Italy negotiated in Petrozavodsk State University on development of scientific exchange and implementation of joint educational programs. The parties have entered into the agreement on interuniversity cooperation assuming possible training of students from Karelia at universities of Italy and organization of scientific and academic practical training.

Also at the press conference there has been presentated the project of virtual museum, devoted to Bolshaya Selga village in Olonets region. According to the University of Florence Professor Sandro Parinello, after experts from Italy complete architecture and landscape research in Bolshaya Selga, Internet users all over the world will be able to get acquainted with cultural heritage of Karelia.

As the majority of wooden historical houses of Bolshaya Selga are damageable, experts from Italy will tell the village residents how to reconstruct their houses in the right way to keep external colouring of monuments.

As participants of the press conference have emphasized, cooperation between Karelia and Italy at this stage is only at the very start, and will continue.
