Vepsians of Onego Lake Coast exhibition is to open on September, 15 at 3:00 p.m. in the auditorium of Prionezhsky region administration (Pravda street, 14).
Vepsians of Onego Lake Coast exhibition is a result of joint creativity of Finnish photographers Juhani Puustinen and Erkki Pellikka who had been travelling over Onego lake coast within a few years. Vepsian villages fascinated photographers during their first visit to Karelia. In spring of 2002 Juhani Puustinen and Erkki Pellikka held the Rune-singing Villages of the White sea Coast of Karelia exhibition in Sheltozero.
Among rural Vepsian settlements there are the village of Derevyannoye, settlements of Shoksha, Sheltozero, Matveyeva Selga, Rybreka, Kskesruchei, and many small villages, where it is possible to find descendants of craftsmen of Northwest of Russia who built wooden churches. Centenary traditions of stone extraction and processing are preserved here. Senior generation of Vepsians still speak their soft language. Today many rural schools offer teaching children unique Vepsian language.
Photographers' subjects were traditional wooden architecture, views on villages, nature and people in their everyday life. The exhibition presents about one hundred color photos. It is organized at the support of the city of Joensuu and branches of the Finland - Russia friendship society of communes of Liperi, Kiihtelysvaara and Kontiolahti (the province of North Carelia). After presentation in Petrozavodsk the exhibition will be donated to Sheltozero Vepsian museum.
Ministry of Culture and Public Relations of the Republic of Karelia, Karelian State Museum of Local Lore, History and Economy, Republican Center of National Cultures assisted in the organization of the exhibition. The exhibition is supported by the Finnish Cultural Foundation, Art Commission of North Carelia Province, and Finnish Literary Society.
Now the exhibition is presented in the library of the Finnish city of Joensuu, and on September, 14th it will move to Petrozavodsk.
