Since ancient times Karelians lodged on coast of rivers and lakes, mastering uninhabited places and giving them their names. Villages received names from names of rivers or other features of the district. These placenames did not change for centuries, keeping historical memory of people living in this territory. With time villages received their Russian designations not always corresponding to primordial. Now names of settlements will be spelled in Karelian dialect of Karelian language. In a way it it is preservation of historical and ethnocultural heritage of both Karelian people, and the republic as a whole.
In 2005 the terms and spelling commission at the Head of the Republic of Karelia and onomastic center of the Institute of Language, Literature and History of Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences had made a great work on harmonization of Karelian and Vepsian names of settlements
The next stage on preservation of these names was establishment of advertising stands with titles in language of radical people on existing traffic signs in places of compact residing of Karelians and Vepsians. Thus, in 2006 they have appeared in territory of compact residing of Vepsians.
On September 10, such advertising stands written in Karelian language were delivered to Kalevala metropolitan area. Within the next few days they will be established on existing traffic signs.
