Russians and Americans are commemorating the 200th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2007. Within the scope of celebrating this anniversary the Consulate General of the USA in St.-Petersburg plans Days of the USA in Petrozavodsk on October 2-4, 2007. Within the Days of the USA delegation of the Consulate headed by the Counsul General will visit Petrozavodsk. Members of the delegation will have a number of meetings with citizens of Petrozavodsk and governments of the town and the republic.
The Counsul General of the USA in St.-Petersburg Ms. Mary Kruger sad she would very glad to visit Petrozavodsk on the occasion of the Days of the USA held at the support of administration of the republic and city of Petrozavodsk. «Karelia has broad experience of cooperation with the USA in many spheres, especially with the state of Vermont and the city of Duluth. The government of the USA supported and supports many programs in Karelia, for example, the Supremacy of Law program going for many years and just starting the three-year program of partnership between the University of Vermont and Petrozavodsk State University in the field of environment protection.»
In cooperation with institutes of higher education of Petrozavodsk and the American Corner the Consulate organized a series of seminars on education in the USA. On October 3 and 4 meetings with students take place in Petrozavodsk State University and Northwest Academy of Civil Service, and also in the American Corner of National Library of the Republic of Karelia. Expert of the Department of State of the USA on training teachers of English language will hold a series of seminars for Petrozavodsk teachers in institutes of higher education of the city and in the Center of Tducation Development on Pushkinskaya str.1.
Together with National Library of the Republic of Karelia the Consulate General organized visit of the famous American photographer Thomas Verner and exhibition of its photos entitled Color as an Object of Landscape which will open in the Library on October 4, 2007. Thomas Verner will teach a master class in the Center of modern art on the subject of Video, Image, Installation.
Representatives of the Consulate invite American citizens to the meeting on October 3 at 3:00 p.m. in the National Library of the Republic of Karelia on Pushkinskaya str.5.
Days of the USA in Petrozavodsk will pass in the atmosphere of expansion of contacts and cooperation of two countries, for which purpose diplomatic relations were established 200 years ago. Demonstration of a documentary film about the first ambassador of the USA to Russia John Quincy Adams will be devoted to establishing these diplomatic relations; the film has been made by famous Petersburg TV-journalist Nika Strizhak and will be broadcasted on October 3 by Nika TV-company. Before the Days of the USA in Petrozavodsk Nika TV broadcasting company will present another documentary film on American history about wives of the USA presidents of First Ladies of America.
