In recent years much attention was paid to development of information technologies in Karelia. As a whole, on readiness for information society among the regions of Russia in the rating of 2005-2006 our republic has moved from the tenth place to the seventh and has become a member of the «gold seven». Among low budget regions, on informatization development Karelia wins the first place confidently among other Russian regions.
According to the Information Society Development Institution, top places on using information-communication technologies (ICT) our republic has won on several parameters. Karelia has risen from the seventh place to the third on using ICT in culture. Only Moscow and the Khanty-Mansijsk Autonomous District have taken the lead over us. The fourth place is awarded to the region for using information-communication technologies in public and municipal administration and in education. These leading positions in ratings grow out of high quality of control over the informatization in the republic and personal participation of the Head of the Republic Sergey Katanandov in them.
Government of Karelia supports projects on informatization of the sphere of education as a matter of priority, therefore today the republic is one of a few regions of Russia where all schools have access to the Internet . Now 294 educational establishments have access to it.
All works on introduction of ICT in the region are coordinated by the Council on Informatization at the Head of the Republic of Karelia comprising heads of authorities, leading experts of education and science, organization of communication and other structures. As a result of activity of the Council the Informatization of the Republic of Karelia in 2004-2007 regional target program was implemented. Concept of the new informatization program for 2008-2012 is developed now.
