On February 16 Petrozavodsk enjoyed the brightest street show of winter within the scope of Hyperborea-2008 International Winter Festival and Solemn closing ceremony of the IXth International Competition of Snow and Ice Sculptures.
Despite of whims of Karelian weather, all the festival eventsplanned by city authorities have been held. Although, due to weather conditions, organizational committee have made a decision to bring corrective amendments in the festival program. It mainly concerned sports and mass actions which were initially planned to be held over the water area of Onego lake (winter-swimming, figure skating and hockey, as well as jeep-show).
However, the key festival event – International Competition of Snow and Ice Sculptures was held. Masters from Germany, Finland, Lithuania, Moldova, Moscow, St.-Petersburg, Tomsk, Kondopoga and Petrozavodsk have taken part in it. Names of the winners were announced on the culmination day of the festival. The best sculptures in all nominations were recognized works of teams from St.-Petersburg and Petrozavodsk. The best ice sculpture was work of St.-Petersburg participants Hyperboreans, the best snow sculpture was Contact also made by the St.-Petersburg masters, while the best small snow sculpture, in the opinion of the jury, was 39 Degrees in Celsius composition made by citizens of Petrozavodsk. This year more than seventy application forms for participation in the competition was submitted, which made a record number.
Program of Hyperborea winter festival this year is traditionally diverse and included competitions, master-classes, concerts, exhibitions, and shows united in three blocks: Hyperborean Entertainments, Hyperborean Art, Hyperborean Games.
Festival actions have started lare January with a quiz on the Borey's country offered by the centralized library system together with the Karelian radio. There passed exhibitions of guests from Lithuania, the VII Open City Chamber Music Festival We'll Fill our Hearts with Music. For the first time to our city came the Surgut Music and Drama Theatre with a play Hyperboreans. The Beginning of the World (plastic version of the young) and a unique Khanty creative team Vont Ne (Forest Woman).
On the day of official opening of the competition of snow and ice sculptures, on February 12, on the quay of Onego lake city dwellers were initiated into Hyperboreans, having received a distinctive sign – a band with the festival emblem. And on February 16, the main day of the winter festival, when the Competition results have been summed up, the Onego lake quay turned into a bright town of Hyperboreans which central objects were the gallery of snow and ice sculptures.
Завершились traditional festival projects - the best snowman competition (this year about 100 teams have taken part in it), dog-show, winter fashion show and youth winter carnival. Besides, on the quay of Onego lake there will pass the program for adults and children from Mitsubishi Center of Petrozavodsk and regional State Inspectorate For Traffic Security, improvised competition from K-Motors company and exposition of Skoda cars.
Citizens of Petrozavodsk competed their strength, skills and accuracy in a small amusement town Games and Entertainments of People of the 60th Parallel, and could receive a super-prize and a title of Hyperborean Fight Champion.
For youth there performed the most popular presenters and DJs of Radio Record, one of the most popular dancing radio stations of Russia, a carnival procession paraded on streets of the city, having gathered about 2,5 thousand participants - teams of universities, technical schools, schools and creative groups of the city. The Grand prix of the carnival went to technical school of municipal economy for the brightest and enchanting image. The special nomination introduced this year - Respect of the Mayor, - went to grammar school N37.
The award ceremony was the main part of the evening enchantling show accompanied by elements of laser show, fiery effects, a bewitching light show and fireworks. For the first time this year there has been intriduced a new tradition – 'heavenly lamps' start. Large shining cones flied up into the sky, and everyone who was on the quay these minutes thought of a treasured desire. The townspeople remembered the Angels of Hyperborea performance held for the first time.
Celebration will last until late February, and the most bright events there will be the Vivat, Boys! IIIrd International choral festival and a concert of popular Moscow rock group Pilgrim on February 28.
