On June 8 Karelia will celebrate the Day of the Republic for the eleventh time. This day, on June 8, 1920 by the Decision of the All-Russia Central Executive Committee there had been founded the Karelian Labour Commune, the first national-state formation in territory of the modern Republic of Karelia, and thus the Karelian statehood has begun.
Since 1999 citizens of Kareliy annually celebrate the Day of the Republic, aspiring to date the most interesting events for this significant date. To forthcoming celebrating Government of the republic has developed a plan of solemn actions to pass in Petrozavodsk and towns and regions of Karelia. Minister of Culture and Public Relations of the RK Galina Brun and the Deputy Chairlady of the State Committee of the RK for Development of Local Self-Government Tatyana Sharipova have presented the plan to journalists on June 1.
These days in regions of the republic and its capital there will pass youth and social events, sports competitions and festivals: festival of modern handweaving, dance festival of choreography of Finno-Ugric peoples, Inter-regional literary and poetic festival, International rural festival of Finno-Ugric peoples. A mini art caravan will pass from the settlement of Päzersky to Kostomuksha. Within the scope of the Days of regions of the Republic of Karelia Petrozavodsk will hold exhibitions and concerts organized by residents of Sortavala, Pitkäranta and Lahdenpohja metropolitan regions. Of course, all these events will pass not only on June 8, and various events will take place during almost one half of the month.
To show riches of the republic and achievement of the people working in Karelia, during the celebration there will pass Hunting and Fishing, Health of Karelia. World of Health and Beauty exhibitions and Agroindustrial exhibition KareliaAgroExpo 2009.
Midnight sun is the symbol of Karelia, and four events of the same name will pass in this period: automobile rally in Lahdenpohja, International Art Festival, the All-Russia festival of aerobics, and Belomorsk will host a town's holiday Petroglyphs of Midnight Sun.
In the streets of Petrozavodsk the will pass the public opinion poll The Day of My Republic for young people to answer questions concerning history of Karelia, and presentation of socially significant projects implemented by public organizations of the Baltic and Finnish peoples place will pass in the Republican Center of National Cultures.
