On September 11-13 the third open international trolling festival The Onego Salmon 2009 will take place in the water area of Lake Onego. Its participants will troll the fish (trolling is fishing by trailing a lure or baited hook from a moving boat).
The festival has begun in 2007 when a law establishing rules of fishing for sport by trolling came into force. In the first year in the sports fishing festival there have taken part 24 vessels, mainly there were crews from Petrozavodsk.
In 2008 the number of participants has grown almost twice. Except for citizens of Petrozavodsk, 39 crews came from Moscow and St.-Petersburg and 11 crews from Finland. Then the festival has taken three days. In the final there have been announced the main winner which was the top-scored crew awarded for each fish caught. The main prize – the boat «Silver» – was disposed of by lottery at the festival closing ceremony among the participants with equal top-scores.
The forthcoming event is featured for both fostering the population's attitude of care towards nature, protection of water resources, irreconcilable attitude to all kinds of poaching, and perfection of sports skill, development new in Karelia kind of sports, frontier tourism and international cooperation.
