On September 17 Head of Karelia Sergey Katanandov has told about results of his participation in the session of the Board of Guardians of the the Valaam Stauropegial Monastery of the Holy Transfiguration held the day before in Moscow, in chambers of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour.
- For the first time session of the Board of Guardians was chaired by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill. - Sergey Katanandov has told. - We have discussed many important issues: restoration of the monastery, construction of roads and bridges, uninterrupted power supply of the island.
Besides, there was formed a working group to prepare the bill of granting the island a special status that would allow to combine harmoniously interests of the monastery and preservation of belief with the possibility of tourist trips of the island.
Sergey Katanandov has also informed, that by now 26 kilometers of cable was laid to Valaam, and by the end of the year the island will start receiving electricity from the power grid of Russia. In the opinion of the Head of Karelia, it is a great victory which means the island will develop.
Matters at the session also concerned resettlement of those inhabitants of Valaam who intend to move to the continent, and construction of a school and and ambulance station on Valaam.
Besides, Sergey Katanandov managed to obtain His Holiness Patriarch Kirill's consent to come to Karelia next year to take part in celebrating the 90th anniversary of the republic.
