The prestigious National Tourism Award (named after Y. Senkevich) was established by the Federal Tourism Agency in 2002, with the aim to promote inbound and domestic tourism in Russia, as well as efficiency and quality of services for tourists.
In 2003 it was decided to name the Award after Yuri Alexandrovich Senkevich, the famous scientist, explorer, traveler, reporter; he truly believed that there is a spirit of a discoverer and traveler in every person.
The Tourism Information Center of Karelia was awarded in the category of "Active promotion of tourist resources of Russian regions".
The prize-giving ceremony took place in Moscow on the eve of the International Tourism Day, on Sept 24.
