Karelia celebrates the 65th anniversary of the liberation from the fascist occupation.

Today for the first time our republic celebrated a new state holiday to commemorate the Day of the Liberation of Karelia from Fascist Invaders. The bill about its establishment was introduced by the Head of the republic Sergey Katanandov in the Legislative Assembly of the RK in response to the numerous petitions of public organizations of veterans of the Great Patriotic War and was passed by the Karelian parliament in June of 2009. This holiday is a tribute to the memory to those who defended Karelia, a tribute of gratitude to the generation that had gone upon severe tracks of the war.

Celebrations on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Karelia from the fascist occupation have begun with the solemn meeting and flower-laying to the Stone of Memory to Soldiers, Partisans and Members of the Underground of the Karelian front. Prime Minister of the Government of Karelia Pavel Chernov, Chief Federal Inspector in the Republic of Karelia Alexander V.Hynninen, deputy of the State Duma Valentina Pivnenko, Mayor of Petrozavodsk Nikolay Levin and other representatives of the bodies of the government have taken part in the ceremony. The main heros of the celebration were veterans of the Great Patriotic War, soldiers of the Karelian front that have taken direct part in liberation of the republic. Petrozavodsk cadets and student of the naval school have marched in review before them.

Prime Minister of the Government of the republic Pavel Chernov has congratulated the front-line soldiers on the holiday: "On September 30, 1944 the last enemy was expelled from the Karelian land. About 150 thousand people fell on the field of battle defending our republic. 57,000 soldies are buried in 472 military burial places in territory of Karelia. The time of those events goes deeper and deeper in the past, however, we should not forget the hard years of the war. Our task is to reach every soldier's tomb, to know who liberated our republic from the fascist invaders. To you, dear veterans, is the glory and gratitude!"

A delegation from Altai - children of those soldiers who fought at the Karelian front during the war - came to the republic for the celebration. The delegation has brought gratitude to our military reserchers, authorities of the republic that have carried out significant work to commemorate the soldiers from Altai that defended the land of Karelia.

Events devoted to the Day of the Liberation of Karelia from Fascist Invaders are held today pass in the regions of the republic. Simultaneously at all memorial complexes of Karelia there have been held memorial meetings, and citizens of the republic have held the moment of silence in memory of soldiers of the front.
