The anniversary of the Republic of Karelia has got its symbol

The 90th anniversary of the Republic of Karelia has got its symbol now. As a rule, the event's symbol is a maskot – an animal, an unusual creature or an object animated by the author's imagination. The symbol of the forthcoming anniversary of the republic became a lynx. On Monday at the briefing in the Government of Karelia the new maskot was introduced to journalists by Galina Brun, Minister of Culture and Public Relations, Sergey Terentyev, member of the competition jury and art-director of the VYHOD Media Center, and Dmitry Vasilenko, author of the winning entry.

The celebration symbol contest was announced by the steering committee on preparation for celebrating the 90th anniversary of the Republic of Karelia directed by the Head of the Republic Sergey Katanandov. The competition jury comprised heads of associations of creative professions, famous artists and designers of the republic, masters of arts and crafts, representatives of executive authority of the republic.

According to Galina Brun, Minister of Culture and Public Relations, it is the first experience of creating a maskot in the republic to commemorate a significant event to be celebrated in territory of Karelia. Authors of the competition entries were to invent an original idea and to submit it in electronic format. When developing the symbol the authors had to consider options of its implementation both on posters, banners and post-cards, and as souvenirs, soft toys, inflatable structures.

22 works of professional and amateur artists and designers were submitted for the competition. From many animals, fishes, plants or even fantastic creatures offered as symbols the jury has chosen Dmitry Vasilenko's lynx. As Sergey Terentyev, the judge and art-director of VYHOD Media Center has told, there have been several reasons for it: the image of this animal is not used often, thus, the symbol of our holiday will be interesting. The more so because this maskot has a real story in the backgroung when during the recent New Year's and Christmas holidays the lynx came to the capital of Karelia. In the opinion of the artist, there was something symbolical in it.

The lynx as a symbol of the 90th anniversary of the Republic of Karelia has been offered and developed by designer Dmitry Vasilenko. The winner of the competition will receive an award of 50,000 roubles, and the symbol of the holiday will continue its life not only as an official maskot: its image will be also offered to heads of enterprises and Karelian masters of folk arts and crafts to produce souvenirs and toys, and soon there also will appear an animation film involving this personage, and, perhaps, comic books for children.
