Workshop conference Karelia on the Ethnocultural and Political Map of Russia: for the 90th Anniversary of the Republic of Karelia took place in Petrozavodsk. The conference was organized within the scope of the Plan of Activities on preparation for celebrating the anniversary of the republic.
Scientists from Moscow, St.-Petersburg, the Republic of Komi, Finland and Karelia, representatives of bodies of the government and institutions of local government of the Republic of Karelia, national public associations, national and cultural autonomies, institutions of education, science and culture, religious organizations, journalists, students of universities of the republic have taken part in the conference.
Guests of the conference were Professor Alexander Popov, Doctor of History, deputy director for Research of the Institute of Language, Literature and History of Komi Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Edward Korshunov, chief of the research department of military history of the Northwest of the Russian Federation at the Military History Institute of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation, Valery Stepanov, Doctor of History, chief resercher of the Institute of Economy of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Pekka Suutari, Ph.D., director of the Karelian Institute of the University of East Finland.
Head of the Republic of Karelia Sergey Katanandov has sent a testimonial to the participants in which he has emphasized that in the context of reforms in the economy and social sphere the state not only is the guarantor of enforcement of constitutional rights of citizens to free national and cultural development, and it bears responsibility before the world community for preservation of the people living in its territory. Head of Karelia has also wished working spirit to all participants of the conference for fruitful work for the benefit of our beautiful homeland.
Reports devoted to the basic stages of evolution of the Karelian statehood in the XX century, the feat of the multinational people of Karelia during the Second World War, issues of interethnic relations in the polyethnic region were delivered during the plenary session of the forum.
Further the conference continued its work within the scope of break-up groups and round tables on the following subjects: Political, Social and Economic Development of Karelia in the Context of History of Russia, The Ethnocultural Palette of Karelia, The Feat of Multinational Karelia during the Great Patriotic War, Concerning Development of Interethnic Relations in the Russian Federation. Experience of Territories.
The conference is organized by the Institute of Institute of Language, Literature and History of the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Petrozavodsk State University at the support of the Ministry of the Republic of Karelia on National Politics and Relations with Religious Associations.
