The South Oleniy island geological and archeological monument

The island is situated in Medvezhegorsky region; in the north-west part of the Onego Lake, in 12 kilometers to the east from Kizhi Island.

This island is a unique geological structure: there are limestone and dolomite rocks of the upper jatuly which contain unusual accumulation of petrifactions (stromatolites and onkolites). Its age is 2 milliards years. The complex of archeological objects was discovered here. It dates from ancient mesolite period. Here are stop and burial ground with 170 funerals where bones of a human being and animals, instruments of labor, implements and sculpture are found.

Protective measures forbid extracting soil and moving it, road laying, building, cattle pasturing, setting fire, unauthorized collecting of specimens.
