Hyperborea-2011 in Karelia

On January 27 Petrozavodsk will officially start Hyperborea-2011 international winter festival organized by the Administration of the city and Social and Cultural Center municipal institution. One Day in a Northern City photo-exhibition will open this day in the City Showroom at 4:00 p.m. The exhibition will consist of pictures representing one day in life of cities in North Europe and America through the eyes of artists. The project organizers' intent is to let us learn more about the nature and architecture of nordic towns, and to feel the magic of parallels of one usual day in life of many people living far from each other.

In February within the scope of Hyperborea festival enjoyed so much by citizens and guests of the city there will be held book and art exhibitions, concerts, competitions and other events devoted to living in the North. The key event of the celebration program will be the Xth international competition of snow and ice sculptures which on decision of the Administration of Petrozavodsk will be held this year again after a pause of two years. Participants of this competition to be held on February 15-19 at various times were sculptors from northern towns of Russia, and guests from foreign countries. This year the steering committee of the competition has already received more than 30 team applications from Petrozavodsk, Kondopoga, Olonets, Murmansk, Perm, Chelyabinsk, Oshta, Cheboksary, Penza, Korolev, St.-Petersburg and Moscow. Special guests of the competition will be sculptors from Petrozavodsk's twin-city of Umeå, Sweden. Selection of maquettes of future sculptures where the jury will choose 10 best projects of works in each of three nominations (ice sculpture, snow sculpture – large cube and snow sculpture – small cube) will be held on January 31. Guests of the festival will see these sculptures of ice and snow on February 15 when the competition starts. The best sculptures will be named by the jury on the last day of the competition on February 19 during the performance In the Radiance of Ice, Fire and Snow along with closing the Xth international competition of snow and ice sculptures, distribution of awards, a concert and a fire-show. The administration of Petrozavodsk invites all the townspeople and guests of the capital to this performance on February, 19 at 5:00 p.m. on the quay of Lake Onego (at the intersection with Lenin Ave.).

Deadline for submission of applications for participation in the competition of snow and ice sculptures and their maquettes is February 1, 2011. Besides, all the townspeople will be able to take part in the family competition Snowman.Com to be held within the framework of Hyperborea festival for the seventh time. Snowmen will be awarded in six nominations: a family snowman, the most cheerful snowman, a philosopher snowman, a romantic snowman, an artist snowman, a sportsman snowman. Competition of snowmen will begin on February 19 at 10:00 a.m. on the quay of Lake Onego (near Lenin Ave.). Families, groups of schoolchildren or friends may become participants of this competition. Young sculptors should observe classical canons of snowman-making using three snowballs from large to small, and to parctice their imagination in decorating their sculptures. Own materials should be used for the decoration. The task time will make three hours.

The program of Hyperborea-2011 festival is very rich and includes lots of activities for the townspeople, most of which will take place on February 19. Among them there are a blitz-tournament for fishermen, Winter Carnival, Extravaganza of the 60th Parallel light show, etc. The detailed program of Hyperborea-2011 international festival will be available on the official site of Administration of Petrozavodsk city district, Announcements, http://www.petrozavodsk-mo.ru, and will be forwarded to all the news media.
